I've been using pilot-link and jpilot for quite some time. At least all
the way back to when I had a US Robotics Palm device. There are some
things that you have to watch out for if this is your situation.
Jpilot and pilot-link can back things up that the consumer
applications cannot. Some of these will cause an endless loop of resets
when you restore. The trick is to attempt to identify the offending .pdb
file and omit it from the backup. This can be frustrating. I ran into
this with my Handspring Treo 300. I cannot remember what the offending
file was. In the end I restored just the standard stuff: Address book,
Calendar, To do list, Memos and then reinstalled my applications.
If you are good with your data it's quite easy to overflow some of
the Palm Applications. This is because Jpilot is so reliable. The last
one for me was the calendar. I had Calendar entries growing back before
2001. This was no problem for jpilot or pilot-link but caused the Mac
Sync software to fail. The solution was to purge all the calendar
entries from the palm before an arbitrary date.
This is probably too late for the original poster but I hope my
experience can help someone else.
