    There were significant USB speed improvements going from the 2.4 kernel 
    to 2.6, and some speed improvements after that.  I'm guessing you didn't 
    go from 2.4 to 2.6 though.
    
    Pilot-link got quicker in the 12.0 time frame and maybe some after.  If 
    you use lib usb (the usb: port) that is much quicker than using a ttyUSB 
    device.
    
    I can't recall any jpilot changes which would have sped things up much.
