It means /dev/pilot wasn't found, and that you probably should check
and verify your udev rules in /etc/udev/rules.d/ and ensure that they
contain the right line for your Palm device. That line should look
like:
KERNEL=="ttyUSB*", ATTRS{product}=="Palm Handheld*|Handspring
*|palmOne Handheld", SYMLINK+="pilot"
This should be all on one line, of course.
