Hello, It's been a long time since the last part of this conversation.
I have been trying to get Ubuntu 7.04 installed on another computer
and have postponed finding a solution to my syncing problem. Please
    allow me to continue.

Just to refresh everyone's memory here, let me go over the story:
    I acquired a second-hand Sony PEG-N710C PDA recently. I have tried
    syncing that to the following:

Xubuntu 7.04 computer ( <--successfully syncs with my Palm Zire PDA)
Windows XP computer (after installing the sony desktop CD software, I
tried syncing, but the lower right hand corner of the screen said that
there is a problem with the USB or hardware. I forget exactly what
    that little text bubble said)
My newly installed Ubuntu 7.04 computer

I told the person from whom I bought this Sony PEG-N710C pda that I
am unable to sync in various computers and various systems. She said
that she did not have any problems with syncing.

This is how I did syncing the PDA with Ubuntu 7.04. I pressed the sync
button on the PDA cradle. The PDA recognized that I pressed the
hardware button and went into the sync screen and tried to sync. Then,
in Jpilot, I pressed the red and blue Sync Button.

    I got the following message:

    ****************************************
     Syncing on device /dev/pilot
     Press the HotSync button now
    ****************************************
pi_bind error: /dev/pilot No such file or directory
Check your serial port and settings
    Exiting with status SYNC_ERROR_BIND
    Finished

Some information that may come in handy: I had another Sony Clie
PEG-series pda, but it's only this current one that has a "USB
switcher" program in the desktop software. I wonder whether the need
of this Sony PEG-N710C for a USB switcher is what is causing
problems. Maybe it is. Maybe it's got nothing to do with the problem I
    am facing.

    Please advise.

    Thank you for your help.

    JC

The message on my Sony PDA is:
    Title: Hotsync Problem

Unable to initiate HotSync operation because the serial port is in use
    by another application.

I have tried different USB ports on the computer. I tired a port on
the back and in the front. My experiment has led me to try syncing
without the cable plugged into my computer at all. And, strangely, I
got the same message as above: Serial Port is in use by another
application. Now, why would my PDA say that when it's not even plugged
    into the computer?
