I don't really understand the USB subsystem, hotplug, udev, etc. But the 
following can't hurt, to the best of my knowledge:

It appears that the device link is writeable only by root or members of the 
'usb' group. It was noted in an earlier post, by David, I believe, that the 
mode of this link should be '0666'.

The other option might be to add yourself to the 'usb' group, in which case 
'usb' would appear when you type 'groups' at your command line.
