Your digital camera must be unique. I have owned and used 4 separate
digital cameras, and they all behave exactly like a USB Palm device when
connected to the USB bus on the computer side.

When I plug the camera into the USB cable, nothing happens on the camera
or the PC side. The desktop knows nothing about it, and the camera knows
nothing has changed.. just like plugging a Palm into the USB cable and
    doing nothing else.

When I switch the camera to the "transfer" mode on the camera's switch,
the desktop then recognizes it and offers the ability to transfer images
to or from it. This is equivalent to hitting the HotSync button on the
    Palm cradle or cable.

An iPod on the other hand, behaves like I think you want your Palm to
behave: when you plug the iPod cable into the bottom of your iPod and
the other end into a USB port on your computer, the iPod recognizes it
and a desktop action can be taken.

But fortunately, Palm's hardware never added that "feature", and I think
it was a wise choice back in 1996 and to present. Originally, this was
because of battery life concerns (when the Palm used replaceable AAA
batteries), but now it could be seen as a major security breach if it
    had that ability.

Imagine what would happen if someone took your Palm from your desk while
you were at lunch, cradled it on THEIR desk, and used pilot-link's tools
to pull all of the data off of it. If your records are marked "Private"
or not, your data is still stored in cleartext on the Palm.

Battery life is still a concern with these high-powered, color LCD
screens, so it behaves differently than an iPod (which polls for that
connection on its bottom port), or one of the recent Windows Mobile
devices which automagically connect when cradled.

I prefer being able to KNOW when I want a HotSync to happen on my Palm
device. There are times I simply want to cradle it to charge it, and not
to connect to the desktop to sync it.
