    What I wanted to say is: In contrast to my USB digital camera, where 
    connecting the device or switching it on and starting the transfer are 
    two separatly triggered actions in syncing a Palm there is only one such 
    trigger event.
    If I understood things right: the problem arises from cases where udev 
    has successfully provided a device which is used by jpilot but is not 
    yet ready for data transfer. If (as in the camera case) in one step you 
    establish the connection things have settled until you - in a second 
    step - start the transfer.
    However I am not familiar with the Linux internals and maybe I am 
    completely wrong.
