    Try:
    
    (1) disabling the jppy and contacts conduits
    
    (2) Do a sync and backup
    
    (3) Copy ContactsDB-PAdd.pdb from ~/.jpilot/backup to ~/.jpilot
    
    (4) Reenable the jppy and contacts conduits, change something and try 
    syncing again.

    I have both enabled.
