    I assume it is USB.
    My guess is that the Linux USB hotplug system is required to have your 
    USB PDA loaded modules (visor and usb*) and "lsmod" show that it is 
    available.  So, I suggest pushing the PDA HotSync button first and then 
    the Jpilot Sync button.
    
    I would let the Hotplug system of your distro load it.  However, that 
    may take some unknown time.  If you push the Jpilot Sync button without 
    lsmod seeing it you will get a "Pi"? error
