    Couldn't recover, so I found:

        http://lists.slug.org.au/archives/slug/2003/02/msg00298.html

and renamed /etc/hotplug/usb/jpilot-sync to .jpilot (to keep it from
syncing when I hit the sync button on the cradle), then followed
    steps 5 and 6:

    5. If the device is new and has no data on it you will need to install
    your user using

        /usr/bin/install-user -p <port> -u "User name" -i <userid>

    6. WARNING: you must carry out this step (backup your ~/.jpilot
directory as a precaution) you can now restore from your .jpilot
    restore directory:

        pilot-xfer -p /dev/pilot -r ~/.jpilot

I didn't move any files in .jpilot out of the way first.

Now I need to figure out how to install Datebook3, my wife is
    complaining is now missing...
