    Do a backup in jpilot and the backup will be in ~/.jpilot/backup/.  Or,
    use pilot-xfer -b {directory} to get a backup.

    pdb format is probably best.  The Palm desktop can't read it, but there
    are other ways to get a pdb file into your palm.  You could use a Knoppix
    CD and pilot-link, a flash reader, mount the palm as a drive, etc.
