During the recent connection related threads some people mentioned
Ubuntu Dapper kernel issues with the Visor module. I have seen the bug
reported in Launchpad (#48442)
I have a feeling that some of the problems are USB bus related. That is,
the problems occur because of the hardware on a particular machine.
Here is a ramble of what I have experienced...
I avoided updating my main desktop from Breezy to Dapper because I read
of so many people having the problem.
I had experienced it on my wife's new computer running Dapper. She has
a very early visor. I bought the serial cradle for it because I think
the USB support wasn't ready for it yet (probably 6 years ago).
I originally tried to get the USB cradle for that working. No luck. I
tried again the other day. I was able to do a backup using coldsync,
though.
So before updating my main desktop computer the other day, I tried my
laptop (was originally a fresh Dapper install) with my Visor Edge. No
problems. Worked without playing around.
Upgraded my desktop to Dapper. No problems.
So I quickly tried my Visor Edge on my wife's computer. I get the problem.
I also couldn't get a USB WebCam working on that computer, It works on
the laptop, though. Both have Dapper installations which haven't been
fiddled with. Googling at the time there were others who couldn't it going.
The USB Controller in the offending box is
0000:00:13.0 USB Controller: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB400 USB Host
Controller (rev 80)
In my desktop box it is
0000:00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW
(ICH6 Family) USB UHCI ##1 (rev 03) etc...
the laptop is Intel, as well. 82801G (ICH7 Family)
Also the offending PC, being non-Intel/VIA, loaded ohci_hcd rather than
the uhci_hcd module.
This has all been with the version of pilot-link that comes with Dapper
(0.11.8-17 ). I did quickly try libusb but I don't think that version
of pilot-link has it. Dapper certainly does.
I have downloaded the source the latest pilot-link but won't get to play
with it for a while.
As I said, gut feeling... but there might be a clue.
