You have to start the hotsync on your cradle/handheld first, before you
can run install-user. When you start the hotsync operation on the
cradle, the kernel and udev will detect the device and create the device
nodes (/dev/ttyUSB0 and dev/ttyUSB1, for example), and it should create
a symlink /dev/pilot. The amount of time it takes for all this to
happen varies by system, kernel version, udev version, distribution, and
apparently the phase of the moon. So, you may have to run the
install-user command a few times until you get the timing right.
