    Here's a somewhat more radical thing to try:  Try moving $HOME/.gconf
    out of the way, then logging out and logging back in.
    
    Gtk and friends appear to save state in weird and hard-to-control ways
    in this directory hierarchy.  It might be worth it to find out whether
    you have some not-terribly-backward-compatible state saved there from
    the upgrade.
